LOC Derby starts today

The 1997 Lake Ontario Counties (LOC) Fall Trout & Salmon Derby kicks off today - Friday, August 15 - along the entire lake shore from St. Catherine's, Ontario, Canada to the St. Lawrence River.

"This is the biggest sportfishing event on Lake Ontario and getting bigger every year," stated Alberta Bennett, Derby Director. "Over 4000 anglers are expected to vie for prizes totaling $100,000 during the 16-day event."

Twenty-six Weigh Stations, located in Ontario, Canada; Niagara County; Orleans County; Monroe County; Wayne County; Oswego County; and Jefferson County, were set to open for derby business this morning at 9 a.m.

Prizes include $20,000 for largest fish; $5,000 for largest fish in each category - salmon, lake trout, rainbow trout and brown trout. Additional cash prizes will be awarded for fish in each category through 10th place. Blind Drawings at each Weigh Station throughout the derby will also add to the excitement for the anglers. Registered anglers do not need to enter a fish to be eligible for the blind drawings.

The LOC Derby Awards Ceremony is scheduled for Monday, September 1, the last day of the derby, at 6 p.m. in Sodus Point. The public is invited to come to see the winners and their fish.
