Brady gets another term as County highway head
By Donna Comella

When the Wayne County Board of Supervisors met Tuesday, legislators reappointed County Highway Superintendent Jim Brady to a four-year term.

Brady's tenure has been controversial, with police investigations into several incidents at the department. Butler Supervisor Dave Spickerman was the self-appointed watchdog of the highway crew, and often voted against highway resolutions because of his dismay with the department. On Tuesday, though, even Spickerman supported Brady's reappointment.

Before the vote, Highway Committee Chair Donna Chittenden (Sodus) took the opportunity to remind supervisors that Brady has been instrumental in the "positive transformation" of the department, has defined policy, and met every deadline. "No other county department has been put to the test like the highway department...Jim has worked hard and he deserves our support."

Spickerman stood and began, "Seeing as I've been the trouble-maker..."

He continued, echoing Chittenden's remarks, and vowed to support Brady.

Two supervisors voted against the appointment - Carm Pascarella (Rose) and Art Ainsworth (Macedon).

In other action, supervisors:

  • Authorized the purchase of a voice mail system for E-911 Communications and the Sheriff's office. Total cost is not to exceed $13,535.
  • Okayed up to $15,054 to paint the trim on the Court House. The work will be done by Wheeler Contractors from Martville.
  • Authorized up to $10,000 for repairs to the jail annex - bathroom walls, vinyl floor tile and paint.
  • Approved a resolution to replace the roof on the County Museum barn (up to $5,712).

The next meeting will be held Thursday, September 18 at 9 a.m. in the Supervisors Chamber of the Wayne County Courthouse, Lyons.
