Vacco asks for parole denial Every week in New York State, two children lose their lives, not from an accident or tragic illness, but from deliberate abuse at the hands of those who should show them kindness, caring and love. These children die from violent and horrific abuse or neglect by parents, relatives or friends, usually in their own homes. The true horror of child abuse was brought into sharp public focus exactly 10 years ago, when police in New York City's Greenwich Village stumbled onto the crumbled body of six-year-old Lisa Steinberg. Found badly beaten in a litter-strewn apartment, Lisa died a few days later, but her short life and tragic circumstance of her untimely death served as a rallying cry for New Yorkers outraged by the plight of abused children. Early next month, Joel Steinberg, a rogue lawyer who pretended to adopt the girl and then beat her to death, will attempt to convince a state Parole Board that he has spent enough time behind bars for killing Lisa. I don't think so. That's why I have written to the Parole Board to urge that Steinberg be denied his release request. I am urging New Yorkers to share with me their view on Steinberg's parole request. I have set up a special "page" on the World Wide Web. It is accessible by visiting my website: Concerned citizens may also write directly to my office at the Capitol, Rome 218, Albany, New York 12224. Copyright © 1997 |
