Wegmans wins recycling award NYS Governor George Pataki has included Wegmans on his first list of Waste Reduction and Recycling Awards. The Governor's Awards honor exemplary waste reduction and recycling practices in two categories: Achievement of Excellence and Innovation. Wegmans earned their award under the Achievement of Excellence category (Large Business). The Governor's office issued a statement touting the Monroe County-based corporation: "With more than 50 food markets operating in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania, Wegmans waste reduction and recycling program kept 57,943 tons of materials out of the waste stream, for a 65.9 percent recycling rate in 1995. Wegmans community relations programs in waste reduction and recycling support its philosophy that "good people, working toward a common goal, can accomplish anything they set out to do."
