Viewpoint - Respect tradition We are very disappointed in our school officials and their actions towards the Class of 1997 and the student body. It is a great disappointment at how our young adults are belittled and openly humiliated in front of their classmates. School officials seem to have a different agenda than to instill morals, honesty, respect for others and tradition and promote an effective learning environment. It seems to become a dictatorship in its current form. As for the seniors, the painting of the road has been a tradition for years. Some may have gone a little too far, by painting the sidewalk and driveway. Some may not agree with it, but look, we have all done something in our senior year. Why did they wait two weeks to do anything about it? But we do not see the purpose in humiliating, belittling and degrading them - then making them announce over the loud speaker how wrong they are and apologize to the underclassmen. Then, on top of that, they held the senior trip up until they could make their "role play" as so-called officials. Then they made them clean the soccer field and pay $2 before they could even think about leaving for Darien Lake. Yes, it may be wrong, but this town is into tradition and THIS is a tradition. We have talked to people who have graduated from Marion and this has been going on for over 25 years. What is wrong with this picture? If we as parents are to instill honesty, tradition and morals in our young adults, then are we asking too much of our offcials to do the same? Respect and integrity are to be earned, NOT expected. We are sure that our officials will come back with some kind of explanation to justify their actions, but if you look into your hearts you will know there is no justification for what they did. Not everyone will agree with us, but that is OK too. Good Luck, Class of 1997, in all your do. Sincerely, top of
