The Wall setting up in Newark

wall3The Moving Wall Vietnam Memorial was transported into Newark Wednesday afternoon, and by Thursday morning, work to erect it had begun.

Volunteers were busy setting up the panels of the black memorial at Stuart Park, Route 88 south, Newark. Hammers, wheelbarrows, plywood...Shirts were hung on shrubbery limbs as the morning sun began to beat on the workers.

wall4The Welcome Tent was up, campers had arrived, and direction signs were ready to be placed roadside. Newark Fire Police were staking "No Parking' signs along the winding roadways of the Park.

By 11:30 a.m., the panels were up, being squared, then bordered with timbers and mulch. Flowers had been delivered and sat under a shade tree waiting to be placed at the base of The Wall.

wall5Opening Ceremonies will take place Saturday morning (Aug. 2) at 10 a.m. Bagpipes will fill the air Sunday for a Canadian Memorial Service at 1 p.m.

Volunteers will remain at the site 24 hours a day, warmed a campfire for The Last Patrol.

Closing Ceremonies will be held Thirsday, August 7 at 7 p.m.
