Kids help flood-damaged
library
By Shirley Kem
Lincoln Elementary School students recently enjoyed a week of
reading and activities in its annual Bookworm Bash with the theme
"Take Flight - Read." A goal was set to read 2000
books. At the end of the week, everyone celebrated with a grand
total of 2385 books read.
During the reading festival, Lincoln School students
enjoyed a program by an airline pilot, a demonstration flight of
a remote control model plane, a musician, trips to the public
library, readers from the community and awards. There was a final
exciting program to complete the week of "Taking
Flight" when a hot air balloonist showed slides and
partially inflated a balloon in the gym.
In planning for the Bookworm Bash, it came to the committee's
attention that a library in Pendleton County, Falmouth, Kentucky,
had suffered the great loss of most of its books (pictured) in
the spring floods through that area. It was decided to offer help
in the name of Lincoln School children. With the assistance of Elly
Dawson, Director of the Newark Public Library, and the support of
Lincoln School PTA, a check in the amount of $200 was sent to the
Pendleton County Public Library. (Pictured with the check are
Lincoln PTA President Carol Rosenthal and Teacher Assistant
Shirley Kem.) Falmouth is on the Ohio River, which flooded
this spring. The library losses totalled about $1,500,000.
All were happy to share the children's success in reaching
their reading goal and to help a community so its children could
have new books to enjoy.
