"Criminals will ignore weapons law" Viewpoint

Concerning Proposed County Weapons Law At the risk of sounding a bit fed up, I ask this question: If a person has already made up his mind to walk into a building intending to shoot or stab someone, he has to be aware that it is against the law. There are already laws in place that cover menacing, harrassment, murder, assault, etc.,etc. If the person involved knows that his planned actions will already land him in jail or get him killed, WHY WOULD HE OBEY A LAW THAT PROHIBITS CARRYING WEAPONS IN COUNTY BUILDINGS? What does he care? The people that are sitting in jail right now for breaking existing handgun and weapons laws didn't obey those laws. Why do lawmakers keep passing laws that only lawbreakers break? The incident in Schuyler County was certainly a tragedy, but to think that a law on the books prohibiting weapons in the building would have convinced the person involved that day to rethink his actions is quite a stretch. The people that the proposed law is meant to stop won't be deterred at all, but a normal, law abiding person who has a permit to carry a weapon will end up not thinking and walk in. Does he then get arrested or get a ticket? Will he have to lose time at work to attend court? How much of a penalty will he have to pay? My point is that I believe that the proposed law will make the wrong people pay the price in this case. Why not concentrate on other areas that would benefit the County?

Sincerely,
Bob Parcero
