$5000 grant for rose project

Newark's Rose Committee has received formal notice of the award of a $5000 grant from NYS through the help of Senator Mike Nozzolio.

"This is wonderful news for Newark," says Arcadia resident and Rose Committee board member Ralph Marcano. "We knew the Rose Project had support from both Assemblyman Bob Oaks and Senator Nozzolio, but with budgets the way they are in Albany, we are surprised and very pleased that Mike Nozzolio was able to secure these funds for the project."

Grants are earmarked for a number of support items for the Rose Project, including designs for plantings on the East Avenue Bridge and an irrigation system for the rose plants which will again be displayed in large planters on the East Avenue Bridge.

"This is improvement on the rope and bucket method we started with last year!" said Marcano. Last season he pulled water from the Erie Canal up to the handrail to water the plants.

Rose Committee volunteer Steve Austin also credits Mayor Fred Pirelli and the Village Board for passing a resolution to support the Rose Project. "The letter the Mayor wrote to Senator Nozzolio in support of the Rose Committee's proposal really started the ball rolling. We're all working to grow the Rose Project and our plans are to eventually create an eye-catching tourist draw for Newark. We're looking to cover the East Avenue Bridge with flowers and with the continued support of the Newark community we'll do that and then see about filling T. Spencer Knight Park with flowers too."

Nozzolio wrote: "Your commitment and dedication to enhance business and tourism through the revitalization of the Roses... in the Village of Newark is certainly commendable and I appreciate the opportunity to be of assistance to you."
