Members wanted for Humane Society
The annual membership drive of the Humane Society of Wayne County will begin on Monday, November 24. Jane Biddle, the membership drive chairwoman, said the memberships will run from January 1 to December 31, 1998.
The Society, which has been in existence since 1985, and has maintained a Shelter for the protection of animals since 1990. Located at 1475 County House Road between Lyons and Newark, the Shelter provides care and shelter for lost, abandoned and abused animals. Each year the Shelter personnel have been able to find homes for hundreds of adoptable animals.
In addition, the Society offers a spay-neuter program, pet visits to hospitals and nursing homes, and educational services. Currently, efforts are being made to provide a cruelty investigator for the animals of the County.
Although no regular funding is available, the Society holds fund-raising activities such as: Pasta Dinners, Adopt-a-Pet Days, a Dog Walk-a-Thon, and Pet Fairs. However, the major portion of the funds needed to keep the Shelter operating is received from the Membership Drive.
The Society offers several levels of membership, beginning with junior memberships at $5 and concluding with life memberships at $500.
Additional information may be obtained by calling the Shelter at 946-3389 or Biddle at 331-2263.
