On November 16 at 3:15 a.m., the Newark Fire Department responded to a house fire on the corner of Colton Avenue and Church Street. Firefighters found an outside wall under the front porch roof on fire. Chief James J. Colacino said the Police Department received a phone call reporting the house fire, and the Fire Department received a fire box alarm, from the box located across the street from the house. Police Officer Strader arrived on the scene within seconds of the call, awakened the occupants and led them to safety. Larry Stell, his wife and two children suffered no injuries, and the fire was quickly brought under control. Fire Investigator Richard Bogan determined that the fire was accidental in nature, caused by a faulty fireplace. The fire chief commended Strader for his quick response and for leading the Stell family to safety. Copyright © 1997 |
