Habitat home dedicated

By Rita M. Goebert

Bruce and Dawn Shove, and children Amber, Erica, Gregory, Ashley, and Zachary, will be celebrating the joy of moving into their own home at 10635 Wayne Center Rose Rd. in Rose, over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Habitat for Humanity of Wayne County, New York, Inc. and its many volunteers and supporters gathered Sunday, November 16, at the Grange in Rose, to dedicate the Shove's new home. Tours of the house followed the official ceremony.

It was truly a community celebration, with participation of the Children's Choir and invocation by Pastor Rev. Dianna Russell of the Rose United Methodist Church, scripture reading by Rev. David Van Wagnen of the Rose Baptist Church, additional music by the Music Makers of Jesus, led by James Balch of the Rose United Methodist Church, and closing prayer by Rev. Dan Corretore of North Rose United Methodist Church.

President Irene Fadden, presented a photo album of the progress on the Shove's new home. Pictures began about 18 months earlier when Mr. John Werner, President and CEO of Lyons National Bank, donated the property with a house on it. They showed the demolition crews, including the Sigma Phi Epsilon college fraternity from SUNY Fredonia, that spent part of their vacation salvaging useable lumber and parts for future use.

Other work groups are shown from the HVAC class at MCC, Western Presbyterian Church in Palmyra, Pultneyville Reformed Church in Williamson, and the HFH of Wayne County Board members' work day. As the new house was being built, the framing, siding, roofing, and interior, workers numbering close to one hundred volunteered. The album documents the rainy day of the groundbreaking ceremony, May 10, 1997, when daffodils were blooming around the old foundation, and now show the joyful day of November 16, when the ground is covered with a foot of snow. A blanket of white covers the tall pine tree out front. Peter Fadden represented all the volunteers when he presented the Habitat Hammer to the Shoves, saying, "Thank God we can agree on a nail and the use of the hammer as an instrument to manifest God's love."

At this time of year, it is especially important to give thanks to our silent partners, all those who purchased cookbooks, walked in the Walk-A-Thon, sponsored and played in our Annual Golf Tournament, rode in the Bike-A-Thon, donated to our garage sale, and collected pennies, as well as those churches and individuals who faithfully support our efforts to build, simple, decent housing for those in need, all year long. We give thanks and praise for the dedication of our Selection Committee in processing the many applications for the homes, and the Construction Committee for preservering in the building of those homes.

We give thanks for all the businesses in Wayne County who have made it possible for us to build this home for the Shove family.
