When the Wayne County Board of Supervisors met last Thursday, legislators:

Agreed to pay just over $35,000 to pave Stuart Park roads that will later be dedicated to the Village of Newark. The Town of Arcadia will do the work of upgrading the roads. With plans for the property to be purchased, the Board approved the Wayne County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) to act as lead agency for the project.

Supervisors Dave Lyon (Palmyra) and Dave Spickerman (Butler) questioned why the county was picking up two-thirds of the tab instead of its usual one-third. "Isn't this breaking policy?"
"The whole project is breaking policy," said IDA Executive Director Barbara Harper. But without some flexibility in policy, Harper said that Stuart Park "would continue to deteriorate" and become even more of a "white elephant."

Don Colvin (Savannah) pointed out that with the village willing to accept the roads, that would more than make up for their one-third. Supervisors unanimously approved the funding.

Voted to support the purchase of Camp Beechwood to the New York State Department of Conservation. Planning Director Sharon Lilla told supervisors that DEC's purchase of the Sodus property, owned by the Girl Scouts since 1929, may be the only way to protect the lakeshore land from private development. When the Girl Scouts decided to sell the 150-acre parcel, private citizens tried to raise the money to keep the camp, but could not manage the estimated $650,000 purchase price. Lilla believes that the DEC would preserve the land and continue to allow public use.
Authorized an agreement with AT&T Language Line Services to handle incoming E-911 calls by those who do not speak English. The service has a base monthly fee of $50. (E-911 Services are expected to be available in Wayne County soon.)
Established a new fee schedule for research in the County Historian's office for non-residents' mail requests: $20 per hour; $10 minimum cost per letter.
There will be a Public Hearing on the County's 1998 Budget on Wednesday, December 3 at 7 p.m. in the Wayne County Courthouse, Lyons.
