Your fees include a 30 minutes credit for labor per issue. Additional time is billed at $50 per hour.
Labor
Labor includes all production time spent processing a publication. Labor could also include Customer Service and training time beyond the 30 day set up period.
News processing
We process news in PDF format at the rate of 165 square inches per minute. If your paper's page size is 11 inches by 14 inches that's 154 square inches. If you had a 28 page paper that would be 154 x 28 = 4,312 total square inches divided by 165/minute, your paper would take 26.13 minutes to process news. Because of setup and install times for news processing, it takes a minimum of 15 minutes to process any newspaper, in this case because 26.13 minutes is greater than the 15 minutes the 26.13 minutes is used
Ad processing
When we extract ads from the PDF version of your paper or we get ads pre-cropped in a folder, one ad per file, we process them at the rate of 3.34 ads per minute. If your paper contained 72 ads, that would be 72 divided by 3.34/minute, or 21.56 minutes to process your ads. Because of setup and install times for ad processing, it takes a minimum of 15 minutes to process any number of ads, in this case because 21.56 minutes is greater than the 15 minutes the 21.56 minutes is used. In some cases, we may agree to a fixed price per ad in writing.
Charge calculation for news and ad processing
Total your news processing and ad processing times and subtract the 30 minute credit. In this case that would be 26.13 for news plus 21.56 for ads minus the 30 minutes, or 17.69 minutes in extra charges at $50/hour would be $14.74 extra.
Things to remember
- Sending all your files at one time will avoid the minimum times required to process either news or ads.
- The "PDF of print edition" edition, if used on your website, takes more processing time. Time can vary based on number of pages, file naming convention, number of files, etc. A good estimate is 5 minutes plus 0.3 minutes per page.
- Processing news from PDF files produces the highest quality results. In addition Quark files take 1.275 times as long as PDF and PageMaker takes twice as long as PDF.
- Rework, including reclassifying ads or stories, editing, etc. always takes more processing time.
- Special requests or checking to be done every week also can take more processing time.
- We use these calculations for billing to assure the fees you pay are fair. When we use new trainees, less productive employees or have internal problems your price will be the same.
